International Day of Forests 2020

TOO PRECIOUS TO LOSE

Forests cover one third of the Earth's land mass and are the most biologically-diverse ecosystems on land.
Without even realising, our wellbeing is linked to forests –
the air that we breathe, the food that we eat, the water we drink, the clothes that we wear – the list goes on.
Forests are critical in combating climate change, yet global deforestation continues at an alarming rate. 13 million hectares of forest are destroyed annually.
In fact deforestation is the second-leading cause of climate change, after the burning of fossil fuels.
It accounts for nearly 20% of all greenhouse gas emissions — more than the world’s entire transport sector.

REVERSING DEFORESTATION IS COMPLICATED; PLANTING TREES IS SIMPLE.

We’ve talked a lot about our partnership with Greenfleet -
the not-for-profit through whom we off-set our carbon footprint by planting native trees and restoring forests to help decrease the effects of climate change.

But did you know that most of our preferred sustainable fibres are made from renewable raw wood?

OUR HERO FIBRE TENCEL™ LYOCELL
A fibre from the forest, made from Eucalyptus Wood

TENCEL™ MODAL FIBRES MADE FROM BEECH WOOD

ECOVERO™ MADE FROM EUCALYPTUS WOOD

To celebrate International Day of Forests we want to tell you more about the Lenzing Group who create Arnhem’s preferred fibres.

FOREST TO FASHION

The origin of all Lenzing fibres is cellulose - a component of renewable natural raw wood.
We love Lenzing for their dedicated to environmental protection and resource preservation.

RESPONSIBLY MANAGED FORESTS.

Lenzing only procure wood and pulp from certified sustainable sources.
The majority of raw wood material comes from forests in Central Europe.
A simple sustainability philosophy is followed - one should not take more wood from the forest than it can regrow.
This basic principle ensures that forest ecosystems remain healthy.

An awesome example is that in Austria, the yearly volume of wood regrowth is around 10 million cubic meters higher than the actual wood quantities harvested each year.

Even when Lenzing source wood pulp from international partners, the same strict sustainability guidelines and criteria is applied.
FSC® and PEFC™ certifications confirm that the wood for fibres from Lenzing are derived from sustainable sources.
Wood suppliers in all countries are assessed once a year by a scoring system utilizing PEFC or FSC® Controlled wood criteria.

Furthermore Lenzing supports the preservation of endangered and primeval forests.
They do not procure wood or pulp derived from primeval forests in Canada or Russia,
or from the Amazon region, or from the endangered rainforests in Indonesia or West Africa.
Pulp purchased by Lenzing comes from wood grown in the semi-natural forests of Scandinavia, the Baltic States, Russia, South Africa, and the USA.
Eucalyptus is the predominant type of wood used, but beech wood, spruce, birch wood and pinewood from certified sustainable forest operations are also processed.

The benefits of managing forests to create wood pulp this way means a reduction in climate change risk, through effective carbon capture and storage.
Additionally, critical ecosystems are protected and a meaningful contribution to conserving biodiversity is made.
Sustainable forest management assists in protecting, restoring and sustaining water quality, flow and watershed health.
And a final key component of sustainable forestry management is that businesses must operate in harmony with their surroundings,
which means that a certified business must contribute to the social and economic development of a community.
This very practice provides opportunities for employment and compensating indigenous groups for the traditional knowledge
that they share regarding forest species and operations.

THE FOREST TO FASHION 360

Forests are essential to life on earth & are fundamental to our business here at Arnhem.

We use FSC certified recycled material for our paper packaging and swing tags.
The FSC label means the product is sourced from responsibly managed forests.
But taking it one step further -
the FSC Recycled label was introduced to recognise the important role that recycling paper and timber plays in protecting the world’s forests.
The FSC Recycled label provides assurance that all the wood or paper in a product has been verified as genuinely recycled.

And the most beautiful part of this 360 story is that by creating fashion with fibres from the forest, at the end of a garment's life cycle
Lenzing fibres decompose back into their original components of CO2 and water, preparing the ground on which new plants and trees can grow.
